Over 60,000 kg of controlled chemicals seized in central Myanmar

YANGON, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — Myanmar police have seized over 60,000 kilograms of controlled chemicals in the central Mandalay region, according to the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control (CCDAC) on Friday.
Acting on a tip-off, the country’s anti-narcotics police raided a house in Kyaukse township of Mandalay on Aug. 13 and confiscated 60,000 kg of caustic soda and 4,500 kg of citric acid monohydrate, and arrested a suspect.
Following an investigation, another suspect connected to the chemicals was apprehended on Aug. 14 in Pyin Oo Lwin town of Mandalay.
The seized drugs had a street value of 293.4 million kyats (about 0.13 million U.S. dollars), the CCDAC said.
The two suspects have been charged under the law, and further investigations were underway. ■
